Week 5-6

The orientation last weekend went well. The hotel we stayed at was extremely nice, and also very new. It is often used as a training facility for pro teams in Paraguay. We didn’t really do anything productive at the Afs orientation. We just relaxed and spent time hanging out.

After we returned on Sunday, my mother brought my brothers and I to her family’s house. We had a delicious pasta pre-game meal. Everyone in this country was preparing to watch the finals of Copa America. After the meal, I went to the house of an Afs volunteer and watched it with some volunteers and Afs participants. Paraguay had made it to the finals without actually wining a game. However, this country still figured that they would win. They lost 2-0. For the next few days, you could see the change in attitude of everyone. Very depressing city.

Thursday I went to conmebol another time with my team, coach, and Freddy, an Afs volunteer who often comes to our practices. After the tour we took the collectivo (public bus system) to our coach’s house. Everyone calls coach "profe." After eating, we played a game against a club called River. (the one from Paraguay)

Friday we had normal practice/scrimmages and I watched soccer in the evening with my brother.

Saturday there was suppose to be an Afs activity that we tour us around Lake Ypacarai. I made my dad stop half way to the Afs office to get out and puke. I felt fine after that. When I got to the Afs office it was closed and only 8 kids were there. The driver of a van showed up and we went by ourselves (8 US kids and the driver) to San Bernardino, which is located at the corner of the Lake. There was nothing to do there. It is a mostly summer city. We still had a great time though and saw more than just the capital city.

After being warm for the past weeks it suddenly became very cold and rainy for the next few days. Sunday I went to Shopping del Sol with my brother and watched a soccer game. I bought a really cool t-shirt from nike. Monday morning was too rainy and cold to have practice so I spent time doing homework. I later went to Mercado Quatro with my mother to buy various items to bring back. This market looked like something out of slumdog millionaire. The huts were made out of tarps and mud or cheap building materials. The stuff being sold was all stolen, extremely fake, or just cheap. The perfect place to get gifts or get robbed. That afternoon we had a very difficult practice in 40-degree weather with rain.

Tuesday I went with my dad after practice to see the public and private hospitals, and also to photograph the sport club that my family belongs to. The public hospital was not like anything I have seen before. Americans built the building in 1947 so it was quite out dated and worn. There were anywhere from 6 to 9 people in one room that should have fit just one. The patients were separate by what they had. As we walked through my dad would tell me which rooms I should breathe less in, to prevent catching anything. The operation rooms were slightly nicer; they had heat. Overall it was a lot less clean, new, and dark feeling than any hospital I have ever seen.

The private hospital was by far one of the nicest hospitals I had ever seen. The 5-story building had incredible views and amazing architecture. The rooms were like suites and everything was completely new. I guess that’s the difference between the people that do have money, and the people that don’t.

I have 2 maids named Julia and Maria. Maria is at home during the week and is my best friend. Julia only comes on Mondays and Fridays to clean.

Next Tuesday I will be home at this time, and the next in school. Time flows by quickly. I have finished Jane Eyre, and am almost done with all my other summer reading. I look forward to coming home to the heat again. I miss everything American and home. I know that as soon as I leave here I will miss this country just as much.

The last two weeks have gone by extremely quickly. In the beginning of the 3rd week, the weather changed for the better. Sunny skies and warmer temperatures meant that training would be harder and longer. Monday’s practice was a tough aerobic cone practice. Tuesday we went to the “sand pit” which is really more of a area of sand close to the river, surrounded by slums and large hill with a statue of mariscol lopez on top. (see photos) Wednesday we had a game in the afternoon. Thursday we had two games and another game on Friday. All effort was spent towards soccer that week.

It rained and rained for the first few days this week, more than I’ve ever seen before in my life. The rain brought colder weather but not nearly as cold as the first week here. Tuesday night I went to a party with Bruno at a disco and had a great time. The party didn’t start till 11pm and I didn’t get back till almost 3. I woke up the next morning (Wednesday) to find it raining hard enough that practice was cancelled! Que suerte! The rain continued all day and the afternoon practice was rained out as well. Thursday we went to the Stadium of the soccer club Olimpia. (see photos) It was nice, but unlike Cerrro Porteno, their trophy room was a shelf in the back closet. We toured the stadium and watched the team practice. After the tour we went to the “Expo.” The Expo is an annual event used to display new products, ideas, and encourage people to buy more stuff. By stuff I mean everything. To get in you need a ticket like a Disney park. They have booths for every company including McDonalds, Burger King; all the major cell phone companies, cattle, rabbits, amusement park rides, CD stores, food courts, tattoos, junk shops. Everything… I bought myself a CD and a couple of little souvenirs to bring home. We spent hours walking though booths, buying, and eating. I took lots of pictures. By 4 o’clock we had seen all we wanted to and went home. Today, Friday, I had a morning practice. I just finished packing for an AFS end-of-stay orientation that is to take place all weekend.

Time is passing quickly and I wish I could stay here longer. I have 50 pages left in Jane Eyre and am not looking forward to going back to school yet.
PS happy birthday calvin!

Happy 4th of July from Paraguay

This week went by fairly quickly and I managed to get quite a bit of summer reading done. The food here has continued to surprise me. This week I’ve eaten empanadas twice, burger king twice, delicious paella, m&m’s, Doritos, and my new favorite, lomito. Burger king, the m&m’s, and Doritos are not nearly as good as in the USA in my opinion. My new favorite food here, lomito, is a hamburger like sandwich with beef, ham, cheese, eggs, tomatoes, lettuce, and sauce. The best place to get it is from the creepy guys on the corner who look like something out of a pirate movie.

July 4th was a normal day for us here. I’m disappointed to have missed it. I always enjoyed the fireworks, food, and of course the Nathan’s hotdog eating contest. To celebrate, the other US kids and I convinced our driver to take us to Burger King after practice.

My family has a membership to a kind of a sports club. They have pools, basketball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, restaurants, playgrounds, and all kinds of other stuff. I enjoy playing basketball here.

Thursday we took the morning practice off and visited the national team stadium and the Club Cerro Porteno stadium. The Club Cerro Porteno was nice but the National Team stadium was far superior. We actually got to go through the tunnel and onto the field, like in the FIFA videogames. I took lots of pictures.

Bugs. I should have known. The first day here, my brothers pulled a dead scorpion out of the pool. The ants are the really strong red ones that you see on animal planet when they talk about the Amazon. They can carry large leaves entirely by themselves and walk with them.

Friday I managed to get a pretty good bloody nose playing soccer. The two weeks I’ve been playing mostly defense but I recently have played nothing but offence and I’m getting pretty good there. After practice that day I enjoyed some Don Vito’s. It’s a chain restaurant that serves only empanadas.

Saturday my brothers, dad, and I went to Conmebol. (confederation suramerica de futbol) It’s basically the headquarters for all South American soccer. Great tour there. We also got a bunch of free key chains and that type of stuff. Took lots of pictures and had a great time.

P.S. –I think Grandma W would be glad to know that the Orlando Magic pants she made for me made it to Africa and to Paraguay.

Feel free to comment. Come back later for more pictures
